The above image published by Popular Science in 1977 provides a cutaway view of the submerged spherical hulls where the crew will live and work, and where the electrolytic hydrogen production facilities will be located. A hydrogen pipeline along the seabed floor then brings the hydrogen fuel ashore, or to a central underwater hydrogen storage system that will deliver fuel to an international fleet of liquid hydrogen fuel tankers. Unlike oil and gasoline, hydrogen is completely non-toxic and pollution-free, thus no environmental contamination will occur when accidental spills or leaks occur.
The mast of wind turbines on a typical Windship could easily rise 500 feet above the waves, and the modularized systems could generate from 1 to 30 megawatts of electricity, depending on how many wind turbines are used. Wind speed increases exponentially with altitude, and as the wind speed doubles, as it typically does offshore, the power output of the wind turbine is increased by a factor of eight, thereby offsetting the higher capital costs of deploying the systems at sea. Within a few years, these systems will quickly make America energy independent of all fossil and nuclear fuels, and eventually turn America into Saudi Arabia-class energy exporter with a fuel that is pollution-free and inexhaustible.
While there will be significant numbers of land-based wind systems, there are many advantages for configuring the units as Windships so that they can be deployed at sea. Consider that roughly 10 million one-megawatt wind turbines will be needed to generate enough electricity and hydrogen (i.e., 100 quads) to make America energy independent of all fossil and nuclear fuels. Given that wind machines are similar to automobiles from a manufacturing perspective, and given that over 15 million automotive vehicles are made in the U.S. annually, it is easy to see how the needed systems could be mass-produced and installed by 2010. But where will the 10 million units be located?
There is a genuine sense of urgency to deploy the wind turbines at sea because according to the most exhaustive analysis ever completed, published in the scientific journal Nature (May 15, 2003), over 90% of the fish in the global oceans have been destroyed in the last 50 years. At the current rate of exponential destruction, the remaining 10% will be lost before 2010, which means we will have allowed the largest and oldest ecosystem on Spaceship Earth to be driven into extinction. If that were not bad enough, the remaining fish are so contaminated with mercury emissions from coal-burning power plants that the fish are unfit to eat.
Why Harry Instead of Bush or Kerry
Many of the most serious economic, environmental and foreign policy problems are related to America 's addiction to fossil and nuclear fuels. Harry is running as an independent candidate for President because unlike President Bush or Senator Kerry , he has an $8 trillion dollar Phoenix Project plan that will supercharge the economy as it generates $1 trillion annually with equipment that will last for centuries. As such, the capital investment will be made by energy companies, not taxpayers, and millions of Americans will be employed as the U.S. becomes energy independent of not only imported oil, but all fossil (oil, coal and natural gas) and nuclear fuels by 2010. While both Bush and Kerry promote token efforts in renewable energy, the vast majority of energy in both their proposals will continue to come from fossil and nuclear fuels. In addition, neither Bush or Kerry have even mentioned the following problems - much less what to do about them .
• Food Contamination : According to some estimates, over two-thirds of the crops and seeds in America have already been contaminated with genetically modified seeds that were developed by the pharmaceutical corporations, which are now lacing the primary food crops in North America with potentially dangerous chemicals and drugs. Only Harry has proposed to make such irresponsible corporate research and development illegal.
• Ocean Destruction : Unregulated "free market" destructive fishing practices are rapidly driving the remaining ocean ecosystems into extinction. In addition, because of the use of coal to make electricity, the remaining fish are so contaminated with mercury that according to EPA, over 630,000 babies (1in 6) are now born each year with mercury contamination. Only Harry proposes to decommission all coal and nuclear plants by 2010 with solar hydrogen production systems that will make America and the rest of the human community aboard Spaceship Earth energy independent of all fossil and nuclear fuels, while providing a vast sanctuary for the remaining ocean ecosystems in the process.
• Scientific Consensus : Because of the horrific rate of ocean ecosystem destruction, over 1,000 top scientists from 69 countries have called for an immediate moratorium on destructive fishing and trawling practices. Only Harry has proposed to work with the UN to have the U.S. Navy and Air Forces assigned to help protect the ocean ecosystems -- with force if necessary.
• Fossil Fuels : There is vast environmental and property damage that comes from oil and natural gas drilling, or the destruction of entire mountain ecosystems to get at the coal. If such environmental costs were factored into the cost of energy, hydrogen made from the wind and water would be the least expensive fuel. Only Harry's Phoenix Plan proposes the critical Fair Accounting Act legislation that is needed to transform oil and coal companies into solar hydrogen companies by ending the taxpayer subsidies for fossil and nuclear fuels and factoring in their environmental, health care and military costs into energy prices.
• Nuclear Power : No one but Harry mentions that every nuclear plant now operating is a ticking time bomb, because of stress corrosion that is occurring in the primary reactor components and systems. The highly-secret nuclear industry never mentions that the existing wastes storage systems have been out of control for years, and that some of the isotopes, such as Iodine 129, will be deadly for approximately 160 million years. Only Harry 's Phoenix Project plan will allow the U.S. to terminate the production of all nuclear wastes, and decommission all of the existing nuclear power plants and programs with wartime-speed.
• Education : One of the most serious problems in American education is that there are very few teachers who are qualified to teach technical subjects, particularly in the critical preschool and primary levels. Only Harry has proposed to organize the most creative teachers to produce high-quality CD and/or videos with state-of-the-art animation on every major academic area. This would then allow the very poorest students - as well as their parents -- to have access to the very best instructors and educational insights in the world. With Harry 's plan for America to become a solar hydrogen superpower, it will have the funds to balance the budget, reduce the deficits, and still have money left for significant increases for education and health care.
• Health Care : The current health care system in the U.S. is structured around the financial interests of drug and insurance companies, and of physicians and dentists who "operate" on commission, which explains why half of all surgical procedures are unnecessary and the majority of health care costs are expended on terminally ill patients in the last few months of their life. Only Harry is proposing to "change course" and eliminate the need for health insurance by providing universal health care for all Americans. This new American Health care system will be operated on a non-profit basis, and it will focus on preventative care that will allow people to breathe pure air when they exercise, and have pure water to drink and unprocessed and uncontaminated natural foods to eat. By shifting to a solar hydrogen economy, the water and air pollution that now contaminates millions of people in America and drives up health care costs will be replaced with pure water and crystal clear skies. In addition, only Harry will transform the vast number of "sick buildings" where millions of people are now forced to spend the vast majority of their time into healthy buildings by mandating lighting and ventilation specifications that simulate the natural outdoor environment.
• The Sense of Urgency : It is exponentially 11:59 for Spaceship Earth , which means we are all like passengers on the Titanic , and we only have a limited amount of time to change course. The unregulated free market policies of Bush mean full-speed ahead into the "exponential icebergs," and Kerry proposes to rearrange the deck chairs. Only Harry has proposed a "transition of substance" that will allow us to change course while there is still time to make a difference. Given that air, food and water are already contaminated, business or politics as usual is unacceptable.
• Utopia or Oblivion : Because of the "exponential age" in which we find ourselves , this generation stands at the threshold of unprecedented developments in science and technology. The great irony is that both utopia and oblivion are evolving exponentially and simultaneously. If oblivion is defined as the destruction of the earth's biological life-support systems, then utopia could be defined as humanity having made a successful transition to renewable energy and biological resources. If the oblivion scenario is allowed to play out , the collapse of our primary food production systems will end civilization as we know it, and the horrific panic and chaos that will then result will make the Titanic or 9/11 disasters seem insignificant by comparison. On the other hand, if we stop the rape and ruin of Spaceship Earth , and change course towards a solar hydrogen economy, a golden utopian era of sustainable prosperity without pollution will result. This, in turn, means the advances in molecular biology and "designer genes" will continue, which will soon allow individuals to eliminate aging and disease on a molecular level with atomic precision. Never before in human history, or the history of life itself, have such extremes been possible, and the decisions we make in the next few years will determine which future evolves.
Help Turn The Wheel
In order for Harry to be on the ballot in many states, and to be taken seriously by the national news media, he must qualify for Federal Matching Funds. That means his campaign must raise a minimum of $5,000 in at least 20 states as soon as possible. Campaign contributions are critical, and contributions from $1.00 to $250.00 will be matched by the Federal Elections Commission. If enough funds are raised, Harry will deploy a Hydrogen Fleet of vehicles, including a liquid hydrogen tanker truck that will refuel the fleet, one or more BMW automobiles, and a hydrogen-powered Shelby Cobra sports car. The Fleet will also include a mobile hydrogen home that will be integrated with photovoltaic solar cells that will be able to make the hydrogen from sun and water while the vehicle is parked or driving down the road. By deploying the Hydrogen Fleet on a national tour across the USA , every American -- as well as the rest of the passengers aboard Spaceship Earth -- will learn about the Phoenix Project Party Platform and see first-hand the practicality of Harry 's vision for the future.
