About Harry Braun

Harry William Braun III is an analyst, author and CEO. He was born in Long Beach , California on November 6, 1948. His father was a sales representative and his mother was focused on raising Harry and his older sister Kathy. After a brief stay in California , Harry spent the next 16 years living in various locations in the Denver , Colorado area. Harry 's family moved to Scottsdale , Arizona in 1965, where he graduated from Coronado High School in 1967. Harry then worked at a number of jobs in order to put himself through Arizona State University (ASU) where he received a Bachelor's degree in history and education in 1971. Harry's undergraduate work was in the social and physical sciences, and it was during his period that Harry began to focus on the serious nature of the global environmental problems, as well as the remarkable progress that was being made in the areas of molecular biology and knowledge in general.

Harry was highly influenced by Professor Albert Bartlett's papers on exponential growth, and The Closing Circle , by Barry Commoner, Future Shock , by Allan Toffler, and Utopia or Oblivion by Buckminister Fuller, who all warned that due to the exponential growth in knowledge and the exponential nature of the global environmental problems, the human community aboard Spaceship Earth was rapidly heading towards either utopia or oblivion. The other significant book Harry read in college was The Immortalist , by Alan Harrington , who predicted the coming era of designer genes that would be able to switch-off the biological mechanisms of aging and disease. As a freshman in Air Force ROTC, Harry supported the war in Vietnam , but by the time he was a sophomore, he had changed his view when he learned that the U.S. government falsified intelligence data to justify the invasion of Vietnam , which then resulted in the mass-murder of literally millions of innocent people.

Harry continued to do graduate work in evolutionary biology and anthropology at ASU, and he received a teaching position at Thunderbird High School in Phoenix in 1972 where he taught both anthropology and history. He was drafted in that same year, but before his physical exam was scheduled, the new Secretary of Defense (Melvin Laird) dissolved the draft, which allowed Harry to continue teaching. But the Earth Day events only increased his and many others awareness of the critical nature of the global environmental problems, and it was increasingly clear to him that the most serious environmental problems were related to our use of fossil and nuclear fuels for energy. It was particularly disheartening to Harry that the vast majority of highly-educated physics professors and nuclear engineers were confidently assuring the general public that they did not need to worry about the nuclear wastes, and that nuclear power plants were the answer to our reliance on the rapidly diminishing fossil fuels. When they ran out of uranium, they would simply build breeders that would usher in the Plutonium Age. While Harry was no nuclear scientist or engineer, he knew enough about basic biology and science to know that plutonium is one of the most toxic substances ever created; it was very difficult to handle and store; and it would remain lethal for over 250,000 years. As Harry continued to study the issue in more detail, it was clear that the existing highly-secret nuclear waste storage facilities were already leaking and out of control, including the Rocky Flats plant in Colorado that was only a few miles from where he lived for many years.

Harry was highly impressed with Edward Thorndike , a professor of physics at Harvard University who wrote in his book, Energy and Environment, that "Increasingly, scientists and engineers are being called upon to give advice here; few of them, however, have adequate knowledge that extends beyond their own areas of specialization." It was a nice way of saying that in the current exponential knowledge explosion, we are typically being informed by highly specialized individuals who know a great deal about very little. But as professor Thorndike wrote: "It is the very nature of environmental and energy problems that there are extensive interconnections, and a broad knowledge of the "big picture" is at least as important as a detailed knowledge of any one aspect of it." Harry was also impressed by the observation that truth and insight is not typically found in bits of information or scientific facts, but in the order and the patterns that one choose to make with them.

While the overwhelming majority of energy experts dismissed the large-scale use of solar and wind technologies, Harry wanted to investigate the matter for himself. It was not very long before he found a number of brilliant scientists and engineers who were convinced that nuclear power plants were not needed because many of the renewable energy technologies could be mass-produced to make hydrogen from water, which could then be used as a pollution-free fuel that was safer than gasoline -- and hydrogen was inexhaustible. The experts Harry found included William Heronemus, a graduate of the Naval Academy who then served as a naval architect before he retired from the Navy and became a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Massachusetts, and Professor W.H. Avery, a professor of engineering and Director of the Ocean Energy Programs at the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. These individuals and their colleagues, along with other engineering teams at Carnegie Mellon University , Lockheed, TRW and Grumman, had all prepared detailed designs for sea-based, solar-powered ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems that could be easily be mass-produced in existing shipyards on a scale to displace all fossil and nuclear fuels. In addition, Professor Heronemus developed the concept of multi-array "Windships" that could also be used for large-scale hydrogen production.

In 1975, Harry gave a presentation on his research to Jay O'Malley, the Chairman of the Board of the O'Malley Companies, a 100-year old building materials supply and real estate firm with its headquarters in Phoenix . Jay and his staff were impressed with Harry's work, and he was subsequently offered a position as an energy analyst to help evaluate potential solar products that could be sold in O'Malley's chain of retail stores. Harry accepted the position and spent the next several years working with Tom Bird, O'Malley's chief engineer, on a comprehensive analysis of the solar and hydrogen energy options and vendors who manufactured solar thermal, photovoltaic, and hydrogen production systems. In 1980 Harry became a member of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy (iahe.org), a peer-review scientific and educational organization. After reviewing Harry 's work in 1981, T. Nejat Veziroglu, a professor of engineering at the University of Miami who has served as President of the IAHE since its inception, invited Harry to serve as an advisory Board Member of the prestigious organization, which has hundreds of Ph.D-level chemists and engineers from over 82 countries.

Harry continued to work with O'Malleys until 1982, when he left to form his own company, Research Analysts, which focused on environmental engineering and photobiology, which involves research in how health and metabolism are impacted by the electromagnetic energy contained in sunlight. Harry's firm worked with the Duro-Test Corporation, located in North Bergen, New Jersey, as part of a technical marketing team to help market their full-spectrum fluorescent lamps that were shown by numerous scientific studies to accurately simulate the natural outdoor sunlight. During this time, Harry and his colleagues organized and provided technical presentations in cooperation with the College of Architecture at Arizona State University , the Medical School at the University of Arizona , the Department of Aerospace Medicine located at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas , and the Naval Medical Command in Washington D.C.

Harry served as the Democratic Candidate for Arizona 's First Congressional District in 1984 and 1986. His opponents were John McCain and Jay Rhodes , respectively, and his issues involved shifting to a solar hydrogen economy with wartime speed. This was when Harry began writing his book, The Phoenix Project; Shifting from Oil to Hydrogen, which was subsequently completed and published in 1990, and then updated and republished in 2000.

In the process of working on the book, Harry was interviewing Chuck Lopez, the chief solar engineer at Southern California Edison's solar test site where the four major types of solar technologies were being field tested. The systems under test included photovoltaic cells, a central receiver, a line-focus trough and a dish Stirling system that was jointly developed by McDonnell Douglas and Kockums of Sweden, which had developed Stirling engines for use in non-nuclear attack submarines. As a result of their many discussions, Chuck informed Harry that the dish Stirling system was not only the most efficient of all the systems under test, but that Edison had made the decision to sell the technology.

After hearing this, Harry and his associate, Roy McAlister , an engineer, worked out an agreement with Edison to purchase the equipment and intellectual property, and when Edison agreed, Harry and Roy set up Hydrogen Engineering Associates, Inc. (HEA), to commercialize the technology. Once the technology was acquired in 1990, Harry became president of HEA and proceeded to meet with the engineering team at McDonnell Douglas who developed the dish Stirling technology under the direction of Dr. Jim Blackmon , and suggested that Dr. Blackmon and his colleagues at McDonnell Douglas team up with HEA to continue to develop the technology in cooperation with the Department of Energy. They agreed, and for the next 10 years, Harry worked with McDonnell Douglas and Kockums to commercialize the system. In 1994, Harry transfered the technology from HEA to Stirling Energy Systems, Inc. (SES), which continued to develop the technology under Harry 's leadership with an investment group headed up by David Slawson , who first came across Harry 's book in 1992. When Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas in the late 1990's, Boeing continued to serve as the Prime Contractor in the DOE dish Stirling development program.

Harry continued to serve as Chairman and CEO of SES until 2001, but unfortunately, the economic and manufacturing data on the dish Stirling system was not favorable, and as such, Harry began an effort to shift SES into the development of state-of-the-art wind energy projects that were well beyond the research and development stage. Harry negotiated an agreement with Vestas, the largest wind manufacturer in the world, and Ocean Wind Energy Systems, which was headed up by Harry's old friend, William Heronemus. Harry also organized a 2-day technical session with Professor Heronemus and his colleagues with a dozen senior Boeing technical fellows at the Boeing facility in Huntington Beach , California . But SES was unable to properly fund the solar program, much less the wind development projects, and as a result, SES decided to stay focused on developing the solar technology, and Harry's company, Sustainable Partners International (SPI), continued to focus on wind energy projects, including the development of a $185 million Mesa Wind Project located in eastern New Mexico.

In 2002, Harry's firm sold the managing interest in its Mesa Wind Project to Catamount Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Vermont Public Service Company, the largest utility in Vermont . This allowed Harry's firm to maintain a long-term financial interest in the project, which then allowed Harry and his principal business partner, Lucille Hays, to pursue Harry's 30-year quest to fundamentally change America 's national energy policy. They and their staff established the Hydrogen Political Action Committee and the Phoenix Project Foundation to help advance this cause, and Harry and Lucille met with Senators Reid and Bingaman, and they attempted to meet with Democratic Senators Kerry, Graham , and Lieberman, as well as Al Gore , Howard Dean and Wesley Clark . They also attempted to meet with Republican Senators Frist, Dominici, McCain, and Lugar. In each case, detailed documents were provided to members and their staff that outlined how important Congressional Hearings would be to evaluate the Phoenix Project proposal, but none of the Senators or presidential candidates contacted expressed any interest.

Since the whole world was watching the California Recall Election, Harry and Lucille thought it might be an ideal opportunity to present the Phoenix Project plan to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who could then solve California 's economic and environmental problems by turning California into a Saudi Arabia-class energy exporter of hydrogen. Harry sent several emails to Arnold and his staff, but received no response. As a result, Harry decided to run as a write-in candidate for Governor in the hopes of breaking the Phoenix Project story with the national news media. But although Professor Veziroglu endorsed and contributed to Harry's campaign, no one from the print or electronic news media was interested in the story. As one science editor explained, the Windship-hydrogen concept was interesting, but the Recall election was a circus, and it was not the appropriate forum to discuss such a serious proposal that is more appropriate for a presidential campaign. Moreover, g iven the nature of the issues involved, both Lucille and Dr. Veziroglu suggested that Harry run for President.

While Harry initially dismissed such suggestions, after careful consideration, he reluctantly agreed that it appeared to be the only practical alternative left to get this information to the American public in time to avoid the exponential iceberg. After testing the waters in the Washington DC and New Hampshire Democratic Primaries, Harry has initiated his Phase II strategy of running as an Independent Candidate for President in the upcoming General Election in November. Although the Democratic party would understandably not acknowledge Harry's primary campaign in New Hampshire , and would not allow him to participate in any of the televised debates, Harry was still able to gain some preliminary exposure with the national news media, including ABC News , CNN , C-Span , Time magazine , The Washington Post , The Baltimore Sun and The Arizona Republic . More importantly, a flood of email support, including campaign contributions, was generated. But in order to be taken seriously by the national news media, Harry needs to qualify for Federal Matching Funds, which means his campaign must raise at least $100,000 in increments of $250 or less from individuals in at least 20 states. Fortunately, individuals from more than 20 states have heard about Harry 's visionary plans for America and pledged their support to his campaign to shift to a solar hydrogen economy by 2010. Neither President Bush or Senator Kerry have agreed to meet with Harry, and unfortunately, Kerry's energy policy outlined on his website is essentially the same as the Bush energy policy, which is to support token efforts in renewable energy while only increasing America's addiction to environmentally destructive fossil and nuclear energy sources.

Neither Kerry or Bush explain how they are going to create new private-sector jobs, and they never discuss the imminent death of the global ocean ecosystems, much less what to do about the problem. They never talk about the fact that every day mountains and their surrounding ecosystems are being devastated to get a relatively small amount of coal, which when burned contaminates our own people with mercury. They never mention that the nuclear wastes are leaking and have been out of control for years, and that every existing nuclear plant is corroding, which means they are like ticking time bombs waiting to go off. Such an accident will make the 9/11 disaster look minor by comparison, because some of the really nasty isotopes, such as Iodine 129, will be lethal for 160 million years , which is why business or politics as usual is no longer acceptable.

 As Harry continually points out in his book, his technical papers and his presidential campaign, the sense of urgency is due to the exponential nature of the energy and environmental problems. It is 11:59 for Spaceship Earth, and if one does not understand what that means, one can not possibly understand the serious nature of the global environmental problems. It is why we are like passengers aboard the Titanic and there is only a limited amount of time left to change course. Harry believes we need to focus on solar-sourced hydrogen because it is the only energy option that can permanently replace all fossil and nuclear fuels worldwide forever; it is the only "universal fuel" that can power every existing automotive engine, vehicle, appliance or power plant; it is completely non-toxic; it is safer than gasoline; and if it is made from water with solar energy, it is both pollution-free and inexhaustible.

While Bush and Kerry promote fuel cells, as a practical matter, their widespread use is decades away and will require the complete replacement of the existing fleet of 225 million vehicles in the U.S. A much more immediate and cost-effective Phoenix Project approach is to simply mass-produce wind powered hydrogen systems and modify all of the existing engines and vehicles, including aircraft, to use hydrogen fuel. And because hydrogen can be made from water with electricity, consumers will be able to refuel their vehicles at home as well as the local "hydrogen" gas station. Thus filling up with hydrogen will be easier, and much safer, than using gasoline or other toxic hydrocarbon fuels where the hydrogen is chemically bonded to the carbon from fossil fuels.

The "trigger mechanism" for this transition of substance is to hold Congressional Hearings in order to pass Fair Accounting Act legislation, which will end subsidies to fossil and nuclear fuels, thereby making solar hydrogen the least expensive fuel. The market incentives will then exist for energy companies to shift their investments to the mass-production of solar hydrogen technologies, which will result in "sustainable prosperity without pollution."

Given that George Bush is the most fiscally and environmentally reckless President in history; and given that he lied in order to authorize the mass-murder and serious injury of thousands of innocent Iraqis and American solders, which then reduced the cradle of civilization to rubble in order to control Iraqi oil, Harry has no intention of doing anything that might contribute to the reelection of George Bush. On the other hand, the only way to get Senator Kerry to change his policies is if Harry 's campaign is able to generate enough public support to make the difference in the outcome of the upcoming election. Given how close the election may be, even 1% of the voters could make a difference . That means there is an extraordinary opportunity for a tiny minority of people to initiate a transition of substance and change course. In the final analysis, however, if Harry is not ahead of Senator Kerry and President Bush in the national polls prior to the general election, he will withdraw from the race and endorse Senator Kerry .

It is important to realize that because of the exponential age in which we live, we are as close to a nanotechnology utopia as we are to an ecological oblivion. But given the exponential forces involved, there is only a limited amount of time to change course, which means the decisions we make in the near future will surely determine which future evolves. This is not only a time to stand and be counted, it is a time to help to turn the wheel while there is still time to make a difference.

Harry's Views on Religion

Harry respects all religious beliefs, because he knows that no one can disprove or prove anyone's personal belief system. Harry Braun grew up in a traditional Christian background, and like many people, was influenced by a number of movies, including The Ten Commandants, King of Kings, The Robe and Jesus Christ Superstar, which was one of his favorite productions. One of his early observations, however, was that each Christian person seemed to have a different idea of what Christ stood for, or what it meant to be a good Christian.

Harry never really questioned the fundamentals of Christianity until after his graduate studies in anthropology and evolutionary biology, when he began to carefully read both the King James version as well as more modern English versions of the Bible. However, Harry was highly influenced by The Essene Gospel Peace , a book that was translated from a Third Century Aramaic Manuscript by Edmond Bordeaux Szekely in 1937. The Essene document provided a very different view of Jesus, whose "miracles" were not based on violating Newton 's laws of physics. Rather, they portray a Jesus who provided truly enlightened, and very specific instructions to people regarding the importance of bathing and diet, where he not only specified what to eat, but how the food was to be prepared, and how much of it to be consumed daily.

From perspective of the Bible and most Christians, what makes Jesus truly unique was "supernatural" miracles he performed, which do indeed violate natural laws of physics. The biblical version of Jesus portrays his contempt for business, profit and private wealth, which is emphasized when he threw the merchants out of the temple, and proclaimed that it would be easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to get into the Kingdom of Heaven - unless, of course, he gave all of his wealth to the poor. The biblical Jesus also made some rather disturbing comments about sex, including that if one even looked at a women with lust, one should gouge ones eyes out because it is better to be blind than not to get into heaven. Or if one engaged in masturbation, one should cut off one's hand in order to prevent the activity, because it would be better to loose one's hand rather than to burn in Hell. When Harry would raise such points with other Christians, they would each come up with different reasons and explanations as to why Harry was misinterpreting the passages, and it became increasingly apparent that in matters of religion, each person has the right to believe their own interpretation of what the Bible -- or the Koran for that matter -- really means.

While the aspect of going to Heaven and living forever was a powerful reason not to question the Christian belief system, Harry could not escape the fact that such beliefs were in direct contradiction to his understanding of science and biochemistry, particularly as it related to fundamentals of neurological consciousness. Yet Harry was not an atheist because he marveled at the complexity of the protein molecules and the human nervous system, and pondered the observation that a watch implies a watchmaker. Indeed, as a technical analyst, it was clear to Harry that science and religion both seek to explain how things got to be as they are, including the most basic questions of who or what created us and why? Indeed, these observations are the central theme behind a revised Creationist viewpoint that is referred to as "intelligent design." Ultimately, the Creationists argue, God created life. But that does not answer the more fundamental question of who or what was - or is - God? Moses and Jesus lived at a time when there was no knowledge of microbes or nanobes, because electron microscopes and scanning tunneling "nanoscopes" would not be invented until the 20 th Century. Moreover, even when the microbes were first discovered with microscopes in the 17 th Century, they were considered at the time to be mindless little "bugs" who happened to be everywhere there was life.

Although enzyme reactions were first observed in the 1830s, little was known about their evolution because the surface imprints of bacterial fossils provided little information about their origin or what their internal molecular structure could have been like. But in the 1970s, molecular biologists discovered that by carefully analyzing the amino acid sequences within a cells nanobial proteins and DNA, it was possible to provide a remarkably accurate picture of the entire molecular evolution of nanobes, microbes, and mammals. While Biblical Scripture indicates a Creationist view whereby human beings and other plants and animals were created in a matter of days by a human-like God less than eight thousand years ago, science has revealed a very different, but in many ways similar, explanation of the origin of life and the universe that begins with the Big Bang that occurred some 14 billion years ago.

While no one in the peer-review scientific community has yet proven exactly how living organisms evolved out of non-living matter, it is clear that the original life forms were not human beings, but amino acids that evolved into protein-scale "nanobes" that are still the key elements of all life and metabolism. It was the nanobes that created the microbes, and eventually, each and every human being -- which makes the nanobes our biological creators. In Harry 's view, this is not a theory. It is a fundamental understanding of biochemistry that all mammals (including humans) as well as all bacteria and viruses have nanobial-scale proteins at the heart of their molecular structure and metabolism. There are no known exceptions. The first protein-based "nanobe" originated over 3.5 billion years ago, and it may still be alive and well because it has since given birth to each and every living cell and organism on the earth. The nanobial proteins represent an ancient and highly advanced civilization that has been responsible for the development and function of everything from bacteria to the human brain and nervous system, which is perhaps the most complex structure in the universe. As such, the nanobes could certainly be viewed as the "spirit" or "life force" within every living cell.

This molecular record exists in each cell of every person and it yields three kinds of evolutionary information: time; genealogical relations; and a record of ancestral characteristics. This living molecular record provides far more information than geologic fossils ever could because it provides a detailed picture of the evolution of the internal molecular structures of the nanobes. Indeed, the molecules within us contain a living record that goes back to a time before the oldest fossils, to the period when the common ancestor of all life existed -- and that common ancestor was a nanobe who figured out how to use RNA and DNA to reproduce itself, and in the process, make "evolutionary" changes. Indeed, the term evolution simply means change. Every time a baby is born it has half of its genetic structure comes from each parent, thus the baby is a new and unique entity - and evolution takes another small step. That is not a theory, it is a fact.

When people examined the human body in ancient times, they could identify major organs that they could see with their eyes, but they could never find the "Spirit" or "Soul" that was felt to be the true "life force" within us. In fact, it was the molecular-scale (and therefore invisible) nanobes and microbes that were the "Spirits that could bring good health or disease or death. In medieval Europe , the Black Death was thought to be an "act of God." We now know that it was an act of the microbes. Given our current scientific understanding of the molecular world, it is now clear that the nanobial proteins are the essential molecules of life. DNA is a 4-digit supercomputer that was built for - and operated by - the nanobes. Indeed, all of the DNA codes are used to manufacture the various types of protein-scale nanobes that operate everything from microbes to humans. Nanobes are not simple little creatures. They are so complex that the most advanced supercomputer ever conceived, called Blue Gene, is now in the process of being developed by IBM to accurately characterize their three-dimensional folding structure and behavior.

Within 10 years, this new generation of supercomputers will usher in an age of nanotechnology that will profoundly alter the nature of life as we know it. Nanotechnology, which the nanobes have mastered over the past 4 billion years, will result in the development of "biochips" that will direct "designer genes" that will essentially eliminate the molecules that cause aging, disease and death. With an unlimited lifespan, Homo Sapiens will have evolved into a new species: Homo Immortalis . While some people oppose such developments as being unnatural, these are probably the same people who go to the dentist when they get a cavity rather than allowing Mother Nature to take its natural course and let the tooth decay until it falls out. Harry believes that the developments in nanotechnology that will be able to switch off the biological mechanisms of aging are the point of life and evolution.

In the event that Harry should die before he is able to have his organs and tissues regenerated, he has "signed up" with the Alcor Life Extension Foundation (Alcor.org), a non-profit cryobiology laboratory in Scottsdale , Arizona to have his molecules of memory frozen. Alcor is one of the many cryobiology facilities that have been involved in freezing individuals after they die, and the reason is simple. As long as the protein molecules of memory are frozen, then the "patient" is not yet dead, and if the molecules are preserved until such time as the nanotechnology era in the future will allow the person to be revived and regenerated, the person will truly be "reborn" into a new species that has an unlimited future of endless possibilities.

When Harry was in college, his favorite musical artists included The Who, the Moody Blues, U2, Stevi Nicks , Neil Young , and Bruce Springsteen . As an adult, Harry spends most of his time listening to a mix of music by artists that include Yanni, Vangelis and movie or documentary soundtracks, including Cosmos, Lawrence of Arabia, Romeo & Juliet, and more recently Crimson Tide, Gladiator, The Road to Perdition, A Beautiful Mind, and the Last Samurai.
